WordPress.com - The best thing about a free WordPress blog is that you can create static pages, such as an "About" page. However, you are limited to a set number of designs you can use, and you can't add any ads. There isn't a straightforward way to earn money with a WordPress.com blog.

LiveJournal - The nice thing about LiveJournal is that it's filled with interest groups. You can network by joining and posting to one of these groups. However, LiveJournal is mostly aimed at the younger crowd. It caters to teens and college students. A LiveJournal blog simply doesn't look as professional as other options.

Those are just a few examples; it's easy to find other free blogging networks. However, these three are among the most well-known, established, and reliable.
